71. Ancient Parting (April 1899)

Ancient Parting (April 1899)

She ascends the tower, the river runs green,

The blinds are rolled up, the bright moon shines in.

Sleeves fragrant with the scent of roses,

The amber cup worth one thousand in gold.

The violet flute played with charming grace,

Pacing to and fro, she is quietly moved to tears.

Barely wedded at sixteen, with the wife’s painted eyebrows,

Too soon she has learned the sorrow of parting.

When will they meet again?

Looking out at the river, she longs for him so far away!

He only said he would not forget her;

How can she make his heart return?

He is gone from here, far far away,

White clouds are stacked on the road ahead.

She caresses his gold-inlaid sword,

Lovingly recalls his prize-winning talents.

Though he does not give her a sable fur coat,

She would give him brilliant gemstones.

The spring breeze brushes the emerald of her hair,

Beset with grief, she descends the high tower.

She would give the gentleman a belt ornament,

And begins to walk along the waterside where orchids grow.
