75. Untitled (1899)

Untitled (1899)

Romantic in your illness, you repudiate the world;

Friendless in my folly, I forsake the flock.

Study clarifies the verses of the ancients no better than a potsherd makes a mirror,

But from the first moment of coughing blood I saw a master’s talent.

Willows on the road color my garments, as travel ambitions stir,

Side locks glow in the inn’s lantern light, as the traveler’s anxiety begins.

Poem complete, I put down my brush and stagger to my feet,

From here I head to the western skies strewn with white clouds.
