162. Untitled (September 12, 1916)

Untitled (September 12, 1916)

By the time I retire, there will be no place;

As long as he is alive, a man will have encounters.

The sound of chirring insects all below the moon;

The lonely traveler’s shadow falls before the lamp light.

I don wild chrysanthemums, the Double Yang Festival;[1]

Bass is sold at the market, the late autumn sky.

On the morrow, sending off the tide, the wind hurries on;

The one sail gone, the water is like the passing years.

[1] The Double Yang Festival is known as the Chrysanthemum Festival, which occurs on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month (September 9).
