171. Untitled (September 22, 1916)

Untitled (September 22, 1916)

I have heard that life and making a living are hard,

In poverty how can one know the sense of the Dao is tranquil?

Idly examining one’s gray hair is like being startled in a dream;

Alone riding the tawny ox, who is that heading out the post?

Disappears on the road leaving no tracks, destination unknown;

When he returns he will show his face, but after how many days?

That blind man from years ago, where is he now?

Playing his flute in a village by a city somewhere.
